Violence Is Not the Answer
More and more people today believe that violence is the answer when conflicts arise or when problems need to be solved. But that way of thinking stands in stark contrast to both the teachings and the example of Jesus Christ. Consider some of the things he said and did.
What Jesus said
In his well-known Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that anger, aggression, and violence are not the answers to disagreements. Consider a few examples.
“All things . . . that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them.” (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31) This rule of conduct, often called the Golden Rule a, encourages us to treat others as we would like to be treated. Since no one wants to be treated violently, shouldn’t we try to treat all people with respect and kindness—even when we disagree with them?
“Whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other also to him.” (Matthew 5:38, 39; Luke 6:29) Jesus was not teaching that individuals should invite abuse. Rather, he was correcting the mistaken idea—apparently taught by some religious leaders—that retaliation was acceptable. He was telling his followers that they should not retaliate but should instead respond with mildness when provoked. b
“Continue to love your enemies.” (Matthew 5:43, 44; Luke 6:27) Jesus taught that we should be kind to those who hate us or treat us unfairly. He did not mean that we should approve of their wrong conduct. c However, by showing kindness to those who hate us, we may soften their anger and even motivate them to respond with kindness in return.
What Jesus did and will do
Jesus taught that violence is not the answer—and he practiced what he preached. On the night of his arrest, one of his followers fought to defend him but Jesus said: “Return your sword to its place, for all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52) Jesus showed love for his enemies by forgiving those who mistreated him, even praying for them!—Luke 23:33, 34; 1 Peter 2:23.
The Bible promises that Jesus—as the Prince of Peace—will soon bring an end to all violence. (Isaiah 9:6, 7) To learn more about this encouraging future, read the article “How War and Violent Conflict Will End.”
